Sharpening

A dull scissor does not stop cutting. It starts pushing — bending the hair instead of parting it, making your hand do the work the blade should be doing. By the afternoon you feel it in your wrist.

Most sharpening makes it worse. A few seconds against a grinding wheel flattens the convex edge the Japanese maker spent hours building. Do that three or four times and the scissor is finished.

We work the other way.

I do not sharpen them myself. They go to the man I trust with my own — thirty-five years at the stones and many thousands of pairs through his hands. He has no interest in being on a website, which tells you most of what you need to know about him.

Your scissors come apart completely. Every part is sharpened and polished by hand on Japanese waterstones. Worn bearings are replaced. Then it goes back together, set to the tension it had the day it left Japan.

You get your scissor back. Not a shorter version of it.

Return postage is included. Send two pairs or more in the same parcel and we cover the postage both ways.

Once you have booked, post them to:

Before you send them

Which scissors do you take?

Any brand, any make — not only the ones you bought from us. If you have a pair you have worked with for years and cannot bear to replace, send them. The only ones we turn away are the ones genuinely beyond saving: a snapped blade, a cracked handle, damage that cannot be ground out.

Every scissor costs the same — cutting, thinning, texturising, left-handed.

Scissors only; we do not take razors or clippers.

What exactly do you do to them?

The scissors are taken completely apart — blades, screw, bearings, tension washers. Every part is sharpened and polished by hand on Japanese waterstones, the same way they were finished when they left Japan. Worn bearings are replaced at no extra cost. Then they go back together and are set to the right tension before they are packed.

What if mine turn out to be damaged?

Normal wear is what we deal with all day. Dull, stiff, loose — just send them.

If something is clearly wrong, a chipped blade, a bend from a fall, a repair someone else has attempted, send a photo to tomskou@icloud.com before you post anything. We will tell you whether it is worth doing and what it costs, so you are not paying to send a scissor that cannot be saved.

How should I pack them?

Wrap the blades so they cannot move inside the parcel, and put a note in with your name, phone number and order number. You pay the postage to us; we pay it back to you.

How long will I be without them?

Your scissors are on the stones within two working days of arriving. Counting post in both directions, most people have them back inside a week.

What if I am not happy with the result?

We do it again. No cost, no discussion.
